Coyote Search (2007) is a single-channel digital video installation, which uses surround sound technology to simulate the haunting cries of a pack of unseen coyotes. Shot in night vision on a hillside in Los Angeles, Coyote Search attempts to reveal the rupture that may occur between sound and vision. The more the video progresses, the more disorienting the video becomes due to the sound design as well as the video content.

Exhibition/Screening History:

April 25-28, 2007

“Retinal Reverb”
curated by Stephen Slappe and Mack McFarland
in conjunction with the 2007 PDX Film Festival

AudioCinema, Portland, OR

A short video of a slideshow made up of photographs taken by the artist’s parents shortly after immigrating to the states in the early 70s. The soundtrack is an excerpt from a phone conversation between the artist and his father about the Vietnam War and how the war affected the artist’s parents’ decision to stay in America after immigrating here.

Exhibition/Screening History:

January 20, 2007

“Come Together,” organized by Ali Subotnick and Harrell Fletcher

LA><ART, Los Angeles, CA

Artist Statement:

Untitled (Conversation) was originally produced specifically for Harrell Fletcher’s “Come Together” event at LA><ART on January 20, 2007. This piece is the second video in a series of works using my parent’s old film and slide footage attempting to capture the immigrant experience based on archival material and memory.

Created from the artist’s parents’ 35mm slides and Super 8 Film, First Snow (2006) attempts to capture a specific memory of winter in the Midwest.

Exhibition/Screening History:

December 5-9, 2007
“Thermostat: Video and the Pacific Northwest,”
Art Video Lounge, Art Basel Miami Beach
October 7, 2006

“Contemporary Film Series: Spark Video Program,”
Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY
“Spark Video,”
Spark Contemporary Art Space, Syracuse NY

Artist Statement:

First Snow is the first in a series of short videos created from my parents’ 35mm photographs and Super 8 footage from the 70’s. For this video, I recorded an informal conversation with my Mother and Father while they watched the footage I had previously put together from their old footage. The result is a montage and an audio commentary of the winter images my parents hadn’t seen in about thirty years.

An experimental documentary shot in a rural Midwestern town accompanied by voiceover text read from the police blotter of a local newspaper describing a certain crime in a specific location.

Artist Statement:

I first came upon the police blotter in my hometown’s local newspaper, “The Daily Standard” while waiting in the dentist’s office. In a small town where nothing much “happens,” I thought it might be interesting to attempt to discover where the crimes in the police blotter took place. This project was first exhibited as still black and white photographs with text at the California Institute of the Arts in 2004.
